Carilion Medical Center Research
An agreement exists between the VT’s IRB and the Carilion Medical Center’s (CMC) IRB, institutions registered with DHHS, for research protocols involving researchers from both institutions where enrollment occurs at only one of the institutions.
This agreement states that, “the institutions agree to defer IRB review to the IRB of the institution where human subjects will be enrolled.” Protocols involving researchers from both institutions where enrollment occurs at both institutions, IRB review may occur at both institutions or, if agreed to in writing, IRB review can be deferred to one institution.
This agreement was established in order to eliminate the requirement for researchers to submit IRB protocols to both institutions’ IRBs, thus eliminating duplicate review.
